An old closet door that won't slide doesn't always need replacing. Start with these quick checks, then see when a repair works and when it's time for new doors.
If your closet door has gone from “a little stiff” to “don’t touch it,” you’re not alone. Closet doors in older Orange County homes take years of daily use, and the hardware wears out long before the panels do. Before you write the doors off, it’s worth figuring out what’s actually wrong.
Most failures come from a few predictable causes:
Don’t force a heavy mirror door back onto its track. If it keeps coming off, leave it until it can be checked properly.
If the panels are in good shape and parts are still available, a repair is usually quick and affordable. Common jobs include new rollers ($50–$75 per roller), a replacement bottom guide, re-securing the top track and realigning the panels so they close evenly. See our closet door repair service for the problems we fix most.
Sometimes the old system has simply run its course. Replacement makes more sense when:
A new system can also improve how the closet works. A triple-track system opens more of a wide closet, and modern mirror or frosted glass doors refresh the whole bedroom.
The worst outcome is paying for three “quick fixes” on a system that needed replacing. During our free in-home estimate we look at the whole door system, not just the symptom, and tell you honestly which route will last. If you replace, we measure for custom doors, install them (most jobs take one day) and haul away the old ones. New sliding doors come with a 3 to 5 year manufacturer warranty and our 1-year labor warranty.
Often, yes. If the panels are sound, new rollers, guides and an adjustment usually bring them back.
Usually a missing bottom guide, worn rollers or a bent track. Our guide to why closet doors come off track covers it in detail.
