In a small bedroom, the wrong closet door eats floor space and blocks furniture. Here's how to choose doors that save space and make the room feel bigger.
In a small bedroom, every inch in front of the closet counts. A door that swings into the room can block the bed, crowd a dresser or turn getting dressed into a dance. Choosing the right closet door can make a small room work noticeably better.
Before picking a style, look at what’s near the closet: the bed, a dresser, the bedroom door, a window. Measure the clear floor space. That tells you how much room a door can use when it opens.
Sliding doors don’t swing at all. They move side to side within the opening, so furniture can sit close to the closet. For most small bedrooms, a sliding bypass door is the most practical choice.
If the closet is wide, a three-panel triple-track system opens about two-thirds of the width instead of half, without taking any extra floor space.
Bifolds open nearly the whole closet, but each side still swings out about half a panel width. In a small room, make sure that swing won’t hit the bed or a nightstand. Bifolds are often the best fit on narrow closets where sliding doors would leave too little open.
Small rooms often have small, out-of-square openings. Custom-sized doors fit the opening exactly, and quality rollers keep them moving smoothly. A door that sticks is even more annoying when there’s no room to work around it.
The best closet door for a small bedroom is the one that gives you easy access without stealing floor space. During our free in-home estimate we look at the room, measure the opening and show you options that fit. Most installations take a single day, and we haul away the old doors.
