Rollers, tracks, guides or panels? What each sliding closet door repair costs and when new doors are the better investment.
A sliding closet door that drags, jumps the track or stops halfway is usually fixable. The question is what it will cost, and whether the money is better spent on repair or on new doors. Here’s what typical sliding closet door repairs cost and how to tell which one you need.
Most sliding door repairs are done in one visit. If the panels are in good shape, a set of new rollers and a cleaned, adjusted track often makes the doors glide like new.
Each panel usually has two rollers, so a typical two-door closet has four. Replacing all of them at once costs a bit more up front, but it avoids a second visit when the next worn roller fails.
Older systems may use rollers that are no longer made. If a compatible roller can’t be found, a new track and matched hardware, or new doors, may be the only reliable fix.
A dirty track just needs cleaning. A dented, bent or loose track has to be straightened, re-fastened or replaced. New rollers won’t help much on a damaged track. See signs your closet door track is failing.
Heavy mirror panels need stronger rollers and careful handling, which can add to the job compared with light hollow-core doors.
If the door still drags or jumps after that, the rollers or track are worn.
Repair is usually the right call when the panels are solid, square and match the room. Replacement is often the better buy when:
