A few turns of a screwdriver can fix a dragging or uneven sliding closet door. Here's how to adjust closet door rollers the right way.
If a sliding closet door drags, sits crooked or leaves an uneven gap, the fix is often a simple roller adjustment. Here’s how to do it safely and what to look for if adjusting doesn’t help.
Look at the bottom and top corners of each panel for a small hole or screw. That’s your adjustment point.
If the track is bent, dented or loose, raising a roller only hides the problem. The door will drag again, and you’ll wear the new position out quickly. Fix or replace the track first. Our guide on replacing damaged closet door tracks explains when that’s needed.
Call a professional for heavy mirror doors, rollers that won’t adjust, a bent track or doors that keep coming off. We carry common rollers and guides, and roller replacement typically runs $50–$75 per roller. See our repair service.
On most doors, clockwise raises the panel, but it varies by manufacturer. Make a quarter turn and check.
If they’re cracked, flat-spotted, wobbly or the adjustment screw doesn’t change the height, replace them.
