Noisy Sliding Closet Doors? How to Make Them Quiet Again

A noisy sliding closet door is usually telling you exactly what's wrong. Here's how to identify the sound and quiet it down for good.

Sliding closet doors should be close to silent. If yours squeak, rattle, thump or grind, the noise is a clue to what’s wearing out. Fix it early and you’ll usually avoid a bigger repair later.

Step 1: Identify the Sound

  • Grinding or scraping: dirt in the track, worn rollers, or the door rubbing the floor or the other panel.
  • Squeaking: dry or worn roller wheels or bearings.
  • Rattling: loose panels, loose track screws or a worn bottom guide.
  • Thumping or clunking: a flat spot on a roller, or a dent in the track.
  • Banging at the end: missing or broken door stops or bumpers.

Step 2: Clean the Track Before Lubricating

Vacuum the top and bottom tracks thoroughly, then wipe them with a dry cloth. Grit is the most common source of grinding. Only after cleaning, apply a light silicone spray if needed. Avoid oil and grease; they attract dust and make noise worse over time.

Step 3: Adjust the Rollers

If a door sits low and rubs, raise it slightly with the roller adjustment screw. Make small adjustments, test, then repeat until the door glides evenly and the panels don’t scrape each other. Our step-by-step guide to adjusting closet door rollers shows how.

Check guides, stops and fasteners

Tighten any loose screws on the top track and handles. Replace a cracked bottom guide; it’s cheap and stops most rattling. Add or replace bumpers if doors bang at the ends.

Know When Rollers or Tracks Need Replacing

Cleaning and adjusting won’t fix worn-out parts. Replace rollers if they’re cracked, flat-spotted, wobbly or don’t turn freely. Replace the track if it’s dented, bent or loose in the header. New rollers typically run $50–$75 each installed. See our closet door repair page.

Look at the Whole Door System

If old, lightweight doors are noisy no matter what, the problem may be the system itself. Modern doors with quality tandem rollers and rigid tracks are noticeably quieter, and some offer soft-close features. If you’re already thinking about new doors, that’s worth considering.

Get the Fit Right From the Start

New doors that aren’t sized or installed properly will get noisy fast. We measure every opening, build doors to fit and adjust them until they glide quietly. Most installations take a single day and include our 1-year labor warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I spray on squeaky closet door rollers?

A light silicone spray, after cleaning the track. Avoid WD-40-style oils and grease, which collect dust.

Why does my closet door make a grinding noise?

Usually grit in the track or worn rollers. Clean first; if it persists, the rollers likely need replacing.
