If you can only reach half your closet, the doors are the problem. Here's how to choose doors and layout that give you real access.
A closet can be full of great storage and still be frustrating to use, simply because the doors cover the part you need. Getting more access is usually about the door configuration, not a bigger closet.
What matters is how much of the closet you can reach at one time and how easily you can move the doors. A 96-inch closet with standard two-panel doors only ever opens 48 inches at once. Change the door system and the same closet works very differently.
No swing space needed, but half the closet is always covered. Best for narrower closets and tight bedrooms.
Three panels open about two-thirds of the width. The best way to increase access on a wide closet without giving up the space-saving slide. See triple-track doors.
Near-full width access, as long as there’s a bit of swing space in front. Great for pantries and linen closets.
Mirror panels add a full-length mirror right where you get dressed and make the room feel larger, so the doors do two jobs.
Note the furniture, walkways and bedroom door near the closet, not just the opening. A configuration that looks good on paper may not work if a bed sits two feet away.
Easy access means doors that move with a light push. Quality rollers and a rigid track keep panels gliding smoothly, especially on wide, heavy mirror systems. See our rollers guide.
Bifolds open the most; among sliding systems, a triple track gives the most.
Usually, yes. We install a new triple track and three custom panels, typically in a single day. New sliding doors run $550–$850 per panel installed.
